The arrival of the PlayStation 5 is in sight, and the question now is, what do you want to do with the old PS4 and PS4 Pro that you have? Selling it can certainly be an option. Yet another option that is perhaps more interesting is to use it for streaming PS5 games.

Yes, you read that right. The old PS4 you have can later be used to play PS5 games via the PS5 Remote Play application, which will be available automatically on the PS4 dashboard. The condition, of course, is that you must have the PS5 console first, then both devices must also be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Of course this is good news for consumers who, for example, have both a TV in the living room and in the bedroom. I imagine they could put the PS5 in the living room, then the old PS4 in the room. So when night falls, they can continue their playing session in the room while relaxing by using the Remote Play application earlier.

Sony itself has confirmed this through a very complete FAQ page. It was explained that they had updated the Remote Play application so that users could not only access their PS5 from a PC or mobile device (Android or iOS), but also via PS4 or other PS5 units.

This technically includes streaming, and that means the maximum resolution is limited to 1080p, not 4K. Especially for those who access Remote Play via PC, they can also enjoy PS5 games in HDR format, but of course, provided that the monitor used does support HDR.

That same FAQ page also confirms that the DualSense controller cannot be used on PS4. The funny thing is, this means we can stream PS5 games using PS4 and the DualShock 4 controller. In fact, Sony itself insists that the DualShock 4 controller on the PS5 can only be used to play PS4 games.

Does this mean that Sony is indirectly forcing PS5 consumers to buy an extra DualSense controller considering that the sales package only includes one controller? You may think of it that way, but this is not new news, because the PS4 itself cannot be operated with the PS3’s DualShock 3 controller. In addition, many reviewers have praised the DualSense controller as one of the PS5’s main advantages, especially when compared to the Xbox Series X.

Regardless, at least you can now get a clearer picture of the future of the PS4. If it’s not possible to sell, at least you can use the console to stream PS5 games from another room in the house.
